Updated: May 22

On 23rd April, Tuesday, an introductory meeting for the Country Coordinators of IYES Foundation's Centre for INDIA-BRICS Cooperation (BRICS CENTRE) was held in a hybrid mode with 3 country coordinators - Jianqi Liu (Coordinator for China), Raymond Matlala (Coordinator for South Africa) and Abdel Rahman (Coordinator for Egypt - joining in from the IYESF's Moscow office with Akil Mohammad, Founder and Chairperson of the International Youth Edu-Skills Foundation and Deputy Head of the Russia-BRICS Project Office. Darya Katkova (Coordinator for Russia) and Arfat Ahmad (Coordinator for India) joined them online with Rahul Sharma, Director of Regional and International Projects at the International Youth Edu-Skills Foundation (IYESF) moderating the meeting and Asfia Kulsoom, Project Associate of Regional and international projects.

Giving a headstart to the meeting, Akil Mohammad shared that the inception of the BRICS Centre stemmed from the lack of organizations working for youth in the BRICS sphere within India. He further explained the core objectives of the BRICS Centre, highlighting three key thrusts:

  • Regular Open Discussions: the centre aims to convene regular discussions coinciding with BRICS agendas and meetings to decipher the trajectory of BRICS initiatives.

  • Research Publication: BRICS CENTRE will curate and publish research papers from diverse scholars, fostering a nuanced understanding of BRICS dynamics.

  • Hosting educational programs for youth to get acquainted with BRICS and enhance their knowledge.

In the meeting, Darya Katkova introduced her project where she talked about running a telegram information channel to cover youth policy and its implementation in the BRICS member countries.

Raymond Matlala made some very interesting points highlighting the need for a better understanding of BRICS rather than just awareness. A task for the next meeting was then set up by Akil Mohammad for the coordinators to come up with different event ideas that could be conducted online once a month.

The meeting concluded with Rahul Sharma pointing out the need to find organisations working for BRICS in the respective countries and coming up with ideas to collaborate with them.

The next meeting between the country coordinators of the IYES Foundation's Centre for INDIA-BRICS Cooperation (BRICS CENTRE) will be held soon. Asfia Kulsoom will be responsible for coordinating with country coordinators for the smooth execution of the meetings.
