BACKGROUND
Youth Day came to be observed as a public holiday following the Soweto uprising that occurred on June 16, 1976, a day that changed the sociopolitical landscape of South Africa forever. Pupils from numerous Soweto schools began a peaceful protest in the streets of the township which ended in tragedy for them because of the brutal apartheid police. The pupils were marching in response to the introduction of Afrikaans (a foreign language they could not comprehend) as the medium of instruction at their schools and overall, the oppressive apartheid regime. Youth Day in South Africa is a day to honor the courage and sacrifice of the Soweto Uprising youth and celebrate all young people, and June is declared Youth Month.
ABOUT EVENT
The celebration with its roots in commemorating the youth of 1976 will focus on reinvigorating that same spirit of determination in the lives of all that will be in attendance. It will include a focus of highlighting those who have shown the will to pursue their dreams in a land foreign to theirs whilst unintentionally bringing inspiration. Those in attendance will get an opportunity to interact from their peers, including those from different countries, with the aim of enlightening them of the opportunities they can equip themselves with.
