The Arctic Fall School 2022 will be taking place in Yakutsk on September 26 - October 14. The event was initiated by M.K. Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University, the Northern Forum, the Association of Technical Universities of Russia and China and the Gorchakov Fund.

Topics of the lectures include:

  • development of the Russian Arctic Zone;

  • Northern Forum regions;

  • culture of indigenous people of Russia;

  • climate change;

  • permafrost issues;

  • Arctic tourism;

  • transport infrastructure in the Arctic (the Northern Sea Route).

The lecture will be given by scientists and top experts of North-Eastern Federal University, the Institute for Biological Problems of Cryolithozone SB RAS, the Permafrost Institute RAS, the Institute for Humanitarian Research and North Indigenous People Problems SB RAS and representatives of governmental agencies, such as the Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of Saha (Yakutia), the Ministry for Development of the Arctic and the Peoples of the North of the Republic of Saha (Yakutia), the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Saha (Yakutia) and experts from the regions of the Northern Forum.

Information about the Arctic:

The total territory of the Arctic is enormous – 27 million sq. km. It consists of territories of the North Pole, part of Eurasia and North America. Almost all of the eight Arctic countries pursue similar interests. Above all, it is economic development, exploration of natural resources and logistics. The countries are also concerned about the state of the ecosystem and environmental pollution.

Information about Yakutia:

Almost 50% of the territory of Yakutia is in the Arctic zone. Yakutia is the largest administrative-territorial unit in the world and it is five times the size of France with three time zones. Its territory is 3 083 523 sq. km. The largest river in Eastern Siberia – Lena – is in Yakutia and it is the 11th longest river in the world. The Yakutian village of Oymyakon is the coldest region in the world. Yakutsk is the biggest city built on perpetually frozen ground. The unique Lena Pillars Nature Park was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Format of the event: in-person/online

Participation is free.

Participants attending the school in person might receive a grant covering participation and travel.

Languages of instruction: Russian and English.

Undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students and all those interested in the issues of the Arctic, climate change, culture and ethnography of the Yakuts and indigenous people (issues of international cooperation, geography, biology, ecology, tourism, history, ethnography, anthropology, etc.)
